Best Time of Year to Move in South Florida (and How to Save)
You are planning a move in South Florida. Maybe you are leaving a rental in Fort Lauderdale. Maybe you are upgrading to a bigger place in Boca Raton. Either way, the timing of your move affects how much you pay, how available the movers are, and how stressful the whole experience turns out to be. Here is what you need to know about timing a move in the Fort Lauderdale area.
Peak Season: May Through September
Summer is the busiest time for movers in South Florida. Schools let out, leases end on June 30 and July 31, and families want to settle in before the new school year. This is when demand is highest, prices are at their peak, and booking a crew gets harder.
If you move during peak season, expect:
- Higher hourly rates or flat rates
- Less flexibility on dates and times
- Longer wait times to book (you may need to schedule three to four weeks out)
- More traffic on I-95, I-595, and the Turnpike during move days
The heat is also a factor. Moving furniture in and out of a truck when it is 92 degrees with 80 percent humidity is brutal. If you are doing any of the work yourself, it takes a toll fast.
Off-Peak Season: October Through April
This is the sweet spot for moving in South Florida. After Labor Day, the rush calms down. Kids are in school, fewer leases are turning over, and moving companies have more open dates.
The benefits of moving off-peak:
- Lower rates (some companies offer discounts of 10 to 20 percent)
- Easier scheduling (you can often book a week or two out)
- Cooler weather (especially November through March, when temps are in the 70s)
- Less traffic during the move
The catch: the holidays can be tricky. Thanksgiving week, Christmas week, and the first week of January are busy even in the off-season. People traveling, deliveries piling up, and crews taking vacation days can limit availability.
The absolute best months to move in South Florida are October, January, and February. You get the best combination of pricing, availability, and weather.
Best Day of the Week to Move
Weekdays are cheaper than weekends. Period. Most people want to move on a Saturday because they do not want to take time off work. That makes Saturday the busiest day for movers.
If you can take a day off and move on a Tuesday or Wednesday, you will find lower rates, easier booking, and a less rushed crew. Monday and Friday are slightly busier than midweek because some people extend their weekends.
Best Time of Day to Start
Book the earliest morning slot. In South Florida, afternoon heat and thunderstorms are daily realities from June through October. A move that starts at 8 AM is done before the worst of the heat. If your move takes all day, the crew is working through the hottest hours with fatigue and storm risk.
Morning moves also avoid the worst traffic. If you are moving between Fort Lauderdale and Deerfield Beach or making the drive down to Miami, leaving early makes a big difference. Sunrise Boulevard, Commercial Boulevard, and I-95 between exits 29 and 32 get congested by mid-morning.
How to Save Money on Your Move
Declutter before you move. Less stuff means fewer boxes, less truck space, and less time. Sell or donate what you do not need. It is cheaper to buy a new bookshelf than to pay to move an old one across town.
Pack yourself. Packing services are convenient, but if you are on a budget, do your own packing. Start two weeks before the move. Label every box by room.
Book early. Even in the off-season, giving the moving company two to three weeks notice helps. Rush jobs cost more.
Be flexible on dates. If you can give the moving company two or three possible dates, they may offer a lower rate for a day that fills a gap in their schedule.
Use one company for everything. If you need moving, packing, and storage, bundling with one company often saves compared to hiring separate vendors.
What About Hurricane Season?
South Florida's hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with the highest risk from August through October. If you are moving during those months, keep an eye on the forecast. A hurricane watch or warning can shut down your move completely.
If a storm is approaching and you are in mid-move, you may end up with belongings split between two locations or stuck in a truck. Plan a backup date if you are moving during peak hurricane months.
